The Biggest Bands of Reality Television

August 1st, 2014

2014 Young Hollywood Awards Brought To You By Samsung Galaxy - Fashion Corner

It is the last day of O-Town week on the Much blog. I know that none of you are secretly relieved. Today, we look at what O-Town birthed, the reality TV show band. Sure, there may have been a couple that came before. The TV band machine was already a thing in the UK before Making the Band started. But the groups that have come since have made both small and enormous impacts on the musical scene. Here are the top 5 reality TV show bands.

One Direction bring Sunshine to Wembley

One Direction:
Obviously this is the biggest band of all time to come from a reality TV show. On one fateful day in 2010 Simon Cowell recognised the guys’ potential as individuals but saw bigger things for them as a group. One Direction was born. They didn’t even win their season of X-Factor but they have gotten so popular that they have managed to avoid being only seen as a reality TV band.

Austin Mahone, The Vamps, Fifth Harmony And Shawn Mendes Perform At The Hard Rock Joint

Fifth Harmony:
I have to say I am really a big fan of Fifth Harmony. They have some real charm. They are another X-Factor band but from the US of A. The group was on the 2012 season of the show. They ended up coming in third but have done really well for themselves based off of their great style and hilarious personalities. And based on the fact that there is a whole Wikipedia page about it, they have won a butt load of awards.

2013 American Music Awards - Arrivals

Danity Kane:
Danity Kane came out of the same reality TV show machine that O-Town did, Making the Band. But in their season, instead of Lou Pealman, P. Diddy stepped in as the puppetmaster and group creator. They were signed to his label Bad Boy Records after their season in 2005. Last year, four of the members announced a reunion at the MTV Video Music Awards but on the first night of the reunion tour, Aundrea Fimbres said she was leaving the group to start a family. Ummm bad timing. The other three have kept performing as Danity Kane and released a new song just this May.

Royal Variety Performance

Girls Aloud:
Girls Aloud may rival One Direction as the most famous group on the list and you may not have ever heard of them. They came out of the Pop Stars global phenomenon all the way back in 2002. They were named the Most Successful Reality TV Group by the Gunnies Book of World Records in 2011. They were also named the United Kingdom’s biggest selling girl group of the 21st century and have over 4.3 million singles sales and 4 million albums sold in the just the UK. Although they aren’t still together, they really made a huge impact. They have also met the Queen.

2014 iHeartRadio Music Awards - Arrivals

Emblem 3 are a trio of surfer dudes who came together on X-Factor to bring their soft reggae inspired jams to the world. Like Fifth Harmony, they are signed to Simon Cowell’s record label. Post reality TV, the band toured with Selena Gomez and released the hit song Chloe. But on June 20, 2014, the band announced on their website that member Drew Chadwick was leaving the band to pursue a solo career. Best of luck to them.
