The more I learned, the more I began to think of Ethiopia as worse for company, like a good guy in a bad neighborhood. The fact is East Africa continues to be in a state of emergency, even as you read this.
Thousands of people have died and thousands more have fled their homes to seek help in refugee camps. Communities have been faced with a lack of clean water, medical supplies and food, and the safety of refugees is threatened by armed gangs as they make their way inside the camps. Once they arrive, women face the risk of rape and children of being orphaned.
The situation is obviously very serious but actually visiting a feeding center made things more clear. I saw tiny babies being evaluated for treatment and generations of family members rallied around for support. The farmers we spoke to were committed to finding food for their families and supporting the entire community. My time here, while hard, was among the most inspiring.
