Cannes Film Festival organizers have announced today that Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby, will be the opening film at this year’s festival.
The film, set during the 1920s Jazz Age in New York, follows the story of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious man who uses his newfound wealth and social status in an attempt to get back his former lover, Daisy Buchanan.
Lots of star power is guaranteed on the Cannes red carpet, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher in the film’s cast. Also scheduled to appear is Bollywood star Amitabh Bachan and rapper Jay-Z, who produced the film’s score.
Luhrmann has a history with the French city and its festival. His first film, Strictly Ballroom, premiered at the festival 21-years ago. “F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside St. Raphael,” said Luhrmann in a statement released today.
The 66th annual Cannes Film Festival runs from May 15 to 26, but North American audiences will actually get to see it in advance. It will be released in theaters on May 10.
