The Horseshoe is celebrating its 60th anniversary with lots of cool music including a six night stand by The Joel Plaskett Emergency next week (Joel’s Ashtray Rock is one of the best albums of the year, FYI).

The idea of the Horseshoe and what it has done for live music and developing artists over the years is one of those rare, mystical, musical fantasies that I STILL search for either through the stories of other musicians or even through my own pursuits.
There was a time when record companies would sign an artist to five or more album deals and develop them over time and stick with them even if sales weren’t meeting expectations or hopes. For instance, K.D. Lang was signed early in her career to a multi album deal; sticking with her and letting her develop led to wide mainstream success without having to compromise who she was.
Today it’s all about…”you have one album and it better do fu*#ing great or you are out on your ass”. Young artists don’t get a chance to develop and their music is placed in every commercial, TV show and whatever other soul sucking musical medium you can think of to pump sales…and if that doesn’t work, on to the next artist.
Some of the greatest music we have never heard is not even getting a chance to be made.
SO….
‘David Puddy‘ high-fives to the Horseshoe for playing an important role in the past when artists have been given the chance by their labels to develop and grow, AND for remaining a great place for young musicians.
