The Invention of Meta-Album Creation… Or something.

Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger looking judgemental. But they'll probably like your review, don't worry.

New York’s The Fiery Furnaces want you to review their new album. But first they want you to write it. Wait, okay, back up: they want you to write a review which they will then use to write an alternate version of their upcoming album I’m going away. And then release both albums on the same day. Confused? I’ll break it down.

The brother-sister-fronted group is led by Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger, and they’ve been playing around and about since 2000. You may have heard of them if you’re slightly more Indie than me, or if you’re the biggest Franz Ferdinand stalker fan ever (and know that Alex Kapranos is dating Eleanor).

They’ve released an album a year since 2003 (and an extra EP in 2005), and for this year’s effort, they’re running an event through their myspace to get YOU to review their new album before you even hear it. They’re calling these tidbits “deaf descriptions”. After enough of these babies come in, the band will take these sure-to-be-gems and produce music that sounds like what you’ve described. It’s like being responsible for the births of your own parents… or something infinitely LESS creepy.

Anyway, it sounds pretty awesome, in a breaking-new-ground-in-the-recording-industry kind of way. Especially since they are encouraging descriptions in languages that aren’t english. Radiohead might even be proud, a little.

There are a couple “sample” descriptions up on their myspace page. I don’t know if it’s a good thing that the samples don’t make any sense or not. Maybe that’s just inspiration for you to get creative?

Are you a Fiery Furnaces fan? Think this is a crazy plan? Already writing your own submission? Let us know what you come up with! And please try not to ruin music for everyone but suggesting something totally insane.
