July 5th, 2010
As far as concert venues go, it doesn’t really get any bigger than the White House lawn. And when that concert falls on Independence Day, July 4th, the birthday of the United States of America, well, it’s the biggest party in the country.
Despite a hiatus while frontman Brandon Flowers launches his solo career, The Killers were invited to play a mini-set at the home of the Obamas yesterday. Songs included “Human,” “Mr. Brightside,” “When We Were Young,” and of course, the timeless, patriotic anthem “God Bless America.”
And yes, there were lots of fireworks.
The band issued a statement saying how much of an honour the event was: “It is a monumental honour for us to be a part of this 4th of July celebration at the White House. We could never repay the service men and women of this country for their contributions and sacrifice. To perform for them and their families on America’s birthday will be our pleasure.”
Here is the complete set list, followed by a clip:
“Somebody Told Me”
“A Dustland Fairytale”
“God Bless America”
“Read My Mind”
“When You Were Young”
