Besides stuffing myself like a fat kid at camp this Thanksgiving weekend, I was lucky enough to kick-start the gluttony in a very happy, dreamy, once-in-a-lifetime place … a glitter and boa-filled Kylie Minogue concert.
Arriving at the Air Canada Centre, you knew this wasn’t a Leafs game: remove the bloated blue and white painted bellies and angry dudes looking to smash their heads together, and insert campy tees, low rider jeans, man make-up and an abiding sense of love, peace, and happiness this town hasn’t seen since June. Yes people, the packed crowd was very boys who like boys and girls who like boys and girls who like girls… sprinkled with a handful of boys who like girls. Think Pride, but without the nakedness or pierced privates.
Kicking off her first ever performance in Toronto (remarkably she’s never toured the US or Canada), Kylie descended from the sky on a giant silver skull (complete with intergalactic tiara) while “Over the Rainbow” pumped through the pink and green laser-speckled air. It was like The Wizard of Oz meets Tron. Androgynous Robocop-ish dancers pranced their way around the stage while Queen Kylie held court. It was trippy and titillating to say the least. Not only can this woman rock a 4-inch stiletto thigh-high, but she can knock out a stage performance that included steamy live bath-house scenes and spandex Dominatrix bodysuits. Now you got yourself a gaudy burlesque Pride-channeling Mardi Gras musical show!! But the icing on this cake had to be the crowd. The audience was the most well-mannered, well-groomed, best-shaped bunch of boys the A.C.C. has ever seen. Not a mosh-pit or hockey jersey in sight.
If you’re not sure what exactly the appeal is, then I should advise you that if you like Lady Gaga, Madonna, Mika, Marilyn Monroe, musicals, fashion, sailors, glam, fairies, or anything of the sort, then Kylie’s your gal. At 41, this breast cancer survivor-actress-fashion icon-Pop Queen has sold more than 60 million records, performs like a 20-year-old, and sings everything LIVE. That’s right… live. No Britneyesque lip-synching here. Backing track be damned, this lady can sing, and in between all the singing and dancing and humping (oh there was lots), Kylie entertained the adoring crowd with banter, conversation and giggles.
There’s a reason Kylie has won countless Awards (Grammys, Brits, etc), has been at the top of her career for over 20 years, and has been an inspiration to women and cancer survivors worldwide: she’s genuine. In a world of fakery, Photoshop, and 15 minutes of fame, Kylie is a breath of fresh air. She’s classy, campy, sexy, sophisticated and she oozes authenticity. From classics such as “The Locomotion” to modern hits like “Can’t Get You Outta My Head” and “2 Hearts”, everyone was surely thankful to Miss Kylie for bringing some rainbows and sunshine and fresh-air to an otherwise heavy weekend.
