Hard Times by Baby Huey
Aaron Abrams, co-conspirator with Martin Gero on The L.A. Complex, chose this song to be the focus track for the hip hop storyline. It’s a gem. Written in 1971 by the inimitable Curtis Mayfield, the song depicts a lonely and isolated man trying to make it in a cold world and trying to figure himself out. Listen to the lyrics. They’re a perfect fit for King’s storyline.
Although I’m filled with love I’m afraid they’ll hurt my pride
So I play the part I feel they want of me
And I pull the shades so I won’t see them seein’ me
Havin’ hard times in this crazy town
Havin’ hard times, there’s no love to be found
We bought the vinyl at Amoeba Music in LA and used it on set and what you hear is the vinyl recording. Superb choice by Aaron and Martin. Listen for the song this season when it’s sampled for King’s new track.
Many of the songs in this episode are more mood-oriented than lyric-oriented. With many strip club scenes, we wanted to create a feel and vibe that was consistent with the clubs, but also contributed to the weight of the scenes. Some songs are from artists The Coppertone, Miss TK and The Revenge, Snakes! Snakes! Snakes!, Young Galaxy and Emika.
