The MiniPops

Okay…someone asked me yesterday who sang the song Eye Of The Tiger (which in itself is a weird and random question)…but imagine my surprise when I couldn’t remember. What did pop into my head though? A long buried rendition of the song by 80s kid sensation group, the MiniPops! Holy crap…does anyone else remember them?

So I immediately Googled them to see what they were all about…and to see if I was retroactively imagining them. I was pleased to find that I was not a) crazy or b) making things up…they did exist from 1982-89. Apparently they started in England as a TV show and then hit it big in Canada only (sometimes I question our national taste) with a number of compilation albums. I myself had two shiny cassette tapes that I used to play in my stylin’ Fisher Price ghettoblaster.

Things took a turn though when I came across a video of the TV show itself on YouTube and good lord - I am totally scared for life.

Is anyone else a little freaked out? I mean the whole thing is wrong on soooo many levels. I feel dirty just watching it! This has tainted my whole joyful childhood…

Does anyone else remember the MiniPops or am I alone in this?

And are you as disturbed as I am by the whole “Jon-Benet” vibe the show gives?

Ick.

  1. Oh man - the girl on the left, dancing, just can’t get her rhythm in synch with the rest of the girls.

    Also, ANY time someone asks me who sings “Eye Of The Tiger” I immediately say MiniPops. That’s the only version I know.

You arent alone in remembering the mini pops… I actually own their record!!! could someone email me or tell me who is the artist to the recent song that starts off with “when I was a young boy I was… then the chorus goes… don’t you know i want it, dont you know i need it all the time… its all apart of my design.
