It’s actually dangerous
November 30th, 2011
The National Association of Shoplifting Prevention (yes, that’s an actual organization) has put together a list of the top 10 most frequently stolen items for 2011, and some of the items on the list may surprise you.
For example, coming in at number 6, are Axe deodorant and body products. Weird, right? Some of the more obvious choices also made an appearance on the list: Designer clothes came in at number 7, with Polo Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger being the shoplifters’ brands of choice, and expensive fragrances and Nike sneakers came in at numbers 9 and 10.
The most confusing item though was also the number one most shoplifted: it seems people have sticky fingers when it comes to “luxury meat” at supermarkets… Think filet mignons and prime rib. We can’t really picture people walking out of a grocery store with meat products tucked under their coats, but I guess it’s a big thing now?
The organization says one in every 11 people who walk through the door of a store will walk out with at least one item he or she didn’t pay for. And it’s been estimated that retailers will lose almost $119 billion to shoplifters this year! With the holiday shopping season well underway, authorities are reminding everyone about the consequences of shoplifting – and they’re not pretty. You could get a fine or even jail time, depending on what you boost.
As for the rest of the list, expensive liquor comes in at number 2, electric tools at number 3, the iPhone comes in at number 4, disposable razors at number 5 and – strangely – Elmo toys come in at number 8.
