We have nothing but love for a Canadian rapper by the name of Drake, who’s rhyming side-by-side with Lil Wayne on stages all over the world. He was a tad tardy for our interview (watch it here!), but showed up at Toronto clothing boutique Nomad ready to talk about whether he’s an artist or a product (his answer may surprise you), and what his conversations with Wayne are all about.
We’ve been burning his new mixtape So Far Gone, along with the 300,000 other people who’ve also downloaded it for free. Here’s a peek at what Drake revealed to MuchMusic..
Because you’re so affiliated with Lil Wayne now, what type of role does he play?
We motivate each other. We’re passionate about the same things and that’s why we’ve become friends. And I know he hears me rapping about Toronto, we talk about Caribana, we talk about the women, he jokes around about Degrassi.

Toronto can be a difficult city to be successful in.
The projects and the music that I’m giving people are generating some of the most love that I’ve ever seen in the city.
How do you go about separating yourself so you’re an artist and not a product?
I don’t, because I have to be a product. You have to look a way that people lust after you and scream and cry even when you set foot on stage!
Be sure to watch the whole interview for more!

No Toronto rapper other than Kardi in recent memory has had a similar buzz to Drake… so calling him the next big thing is no problem the way i see it.. his affiliation with Wayne just makes it all the more credible. Drake is smart too.. unlike Wayne’s Young Money artists who seem to just be looking to make a name off Wayne, Drake has pushed himself away from being signed to YM and carved out his own path as an artist Wayne respects greatly. You don’t see Wayne spitting his own artists’ verses at the VMAs.. he’s spittin Drake
I agree with both these comments dont give Drake the big head just yet let him sign the deal and drop a Album then will lets you know if he’s the big thing cause i been listen to the dude for three years and he hot foreal foreal but other people think differently so lets see whats up when he drops an album
Drake has something different to offer. I think that if he uses his talent right he’ll be able to go far. the next big thing or not.. whatever real fans will listen to his music anyways. i’ve been doing it for a long time and others too. and i’m really glad to see that he’s doing something else then the type of music we hear all day everyday.
I agree. I’m in love with him right now but I won’t be for long if he gets a big head. PlEaSe don’t get a big head. His album will drop early this year and i’m so excited. So Far gone is So right!

I’m feeling So Far Gone and have enough respect for someone from my city doing big things in hip-hop, generating this kind of buzz and working with Wayne/Young Money. But all the media need to be easy on this “Next Big Thing” title they’re putting on Drake. I know that he has the talent to live up to this title and I’m sure he embraces it but it’s seriously not helping dude. Over the last few years we’ve had so many hip-hop artists generating a lot of excitement online and having media calling them the next big thing just for them to completely drop off the map or fall into a category where no one is checking for them. It’s great to see Drake getting love from the media but don’t tell us he’s the next big thing - we don’t want to hear all that. Let us tell you.
