The Pigeon Detectives

Yoav
Braving the snowstorm we had on Saturday, I managed to see The Pigeon Detectives at Lee’s Palace. On my way there I noticed how empty the streets were and I thought ‘there isn’t going to be a big crowd tonight!’ But I was wrong, Lee’s Palace wasn’t jam-packed but wasn’t empty either. Anyway, on to the show…On the bill there were 4 bands but I only got a chance to see two. Yoav & The Pigeon Detectives.
Yoav just released his first record and had a big following at the show. There were a few girls that were in love with the guy! After listening to his album at work I thought it would be interesting to see him live. I was surprised to see that it’s just him with a guitar playing his songs, all along I thought he had a full band! He used this thing that records what you play last and loops it whenever you want and that’s how he made it sound like he had a full band playing behind him. I enjoyed a few songs of his and was surprised when he did a cover of The Pixies’ Where Is My Mind. Once he finished his set he walked off stage and moments later those girls that were in love with him jumped on stage and followed him backstage!
And now The Pigeon Detectives…
I’ve been listening to these guys since the summer and was pumped when they hit the stage at Lee’s Palace! Not knowing how they are live, I didn’t know what to expect. From the first song Romantic Type to their last song (which I can’t remember) the lead singer, Matt Bowman, did not stop once to take a breath! From running around on stage, to walking on a tiny ledge and falling, to climbing the speakers telling the crowd that the clapping needs to be better, and to finally jumping into the crowd and body surfing! While doing all that he sounded pretty good, except for the times he didn’t have the mic in his hand. Confused as to why it wasn’t in his hand? Well from what I took in, Matt likes to throw the mic and catch it a lot. The majority of time he caught it but there were times where he couldn’t and missed parts of the song, but that just made the show even better! They pumped out song after song after song. They also played some new tracks that they have never played back home in England. Even though they had some technical difficulties it didn’t stop the lads from rocking out. Lead guitarist Oliver Main’s guitar pedal busted and as one of the crew members was fixing it Matt urged the crowd to give a round of applause for the crew member with a screwdriver who fixed it! By the end of the show, the crowd was really into it, clapping to the beats, singing along and at times taking over the vocals for the chorus.
Throughout the show I found Matt’s onstage performance exciting, but what he did at the end made my night. As the final song was nearing its end, Matt stood on the drums with his back to the crowd and told the crowd to put their hands up. The crowd fully interacted and lifted their hands in the air, then Matt jumps down from the drums, starts running and crowd surfs! From all the concerts I’ve been to I’ve never seen the lead singer do that and I loved it! All in all great show and was glad to see them live!
