The Shift: Sudhershi

February 10th, 2009

MuchMusic viewer Sudhershi gets to spend a day with Matte Babel in what was supposed to be a friendly cooking competition. Unfortunately, Matte takes any kind of competition way too seriously – but Sudhershi is up for his challenge!

Find out who wins when Sudhershi co-hosts on TV for the first time in her life tonight at 11pm ET on The Shift.

Here’s what she has to say about the experience!

A tad bit unreal, but an amazing experience nonetheless! Yeah, that’s probably how I’d describe it.

My name is Sudhershi Kularatnam, or Shia for short, I’m 19 years old from Markham, Ontario. I had the privilege of co-hosting with the lovely and charming Matte Babel this week on The Shift.

It was a few months ago that my sister Vishanthri and friend, Sinthu, created that audition tape. As time went by our hopes that I’d get on the show were fading and we were starting to think, ‘Oh well, it was fun making the video’. Until that faithful day, I was sitting in my dorm at the University of Waterloo doing my daily inbox check. Voila! I received a reply to be on the show from Sharon Kavanaugh, the very beautiful producer of The Shift. We decided since I couldn’t cook for my life that we’d try that out on the show.

Friday came faster than ever and it was time for the shoot. I did some breathing exercises my Speech Communications teacher had taught me to calm my nerves. Sharon greeted Sinthu and I at the door and introduced us to Matte. If you thought he was a cool guy on television, boy, do u have to meet him in person. He is the most down to earth and easy to talk to talk to guy ever which made me feel a lot more comfortable. It was nice that he went to school at Wilfred Laurier, only a few minutes away from the University of Waterloo so we had more than I thought we’d have in common.

We went to the Culinary Arts School of Ontario and met the cooking instructor, Chef Terry. I had previously admitted to my misfortune in the kitchen, but Matte’s ego showed off a bit too much confidence. It was a competition between the two of us to watch the demonstration and see who could best replicate Chef Terry’s mouth watering chocolate cake, truffle, strawberry, dessert thing – I may not remember the name, but it definitely looked delicious!

Matte’s technique was to be sloppy and rush, while I on the other hand decided to take my time using caramelization to bring out the flavours of my dessert. We were then blindfolded and taste tested each other’s creations to determine who was the better cook. The winner was… I guess you’ll have to find that out on the show!

Co-hosting on The Shift was definitely a dream come true for me. If this is something you want to do as well I strongly suggest you make that audition tape and hopefully you too can understand how great of an experience this was for me!
