If you don’t know The Sounds by now, I get the feeling you will before 2009 is through.
The Swedish band, whose third album Crossing the Rubicon drops June 2nd, will spend the summer on tour with No Doubt. If the crowd response at last night’s sold-out Mod Club was any indication, The Sounds brash, electro-pop rock is catching on.
It doesn’t hurt that lead singer Maja Ivarsson looks like a supermodel and spends most of the show dancing up a sweat. She oozed confidence from the start, strutting to the microphone as she brushed off her shoulders. Introducing the catchy new single “Nobody Sleeps When I’m Awake,” she declared, “I know you’re gonna like it.”

On “Ego,” she kissed her flexed bicep and threw a middle finger in the air.
But the sassy singer isn’t The Sounds’ only draw. She’s backed by a quartet of tightly knit musicians (bassist Johan Bengtsson and guitarist Felix Rodriguez are childhood friends) who shared vocal duties on the synth-driven “Hurt You.”

Midway through the show, Ivarsson led the crowd in a rendition of “Happy Birthday” to drummer Fredrik Nilsson, to whom she announced, “I love you, man. You’re the greatest drummer ever.”
The party atmosphere made for a fun show, and the band is sure to pick up a few (thousand) new fans opening for Gwen and the boys.
