The Two Best Xmas Movies

December 17th, 2008

There may be a bajillion xmas movies, but for some reason there are only two that I’ve seen a bajillion times. That’s ok though, cause they’re the only two that really matter anyway. Don’t even try to argue, I know it’s true.

One Magic Christmas

Has anybody else seen this? I don’t care, it’s the best. So family-friendly it’s not funny, but nostalgia wins and besides, the incomparable Mary Steenburgen is totally in it. She plays Ginny, a mother who hates Christmas and finds her life ransacked when her husband dies in a bank robbery. Of course, she learns a few lessons along the way, and her daughter gets to go to the North Pole, that lucky betch. If you are 19-34 and don’t like sappy movies, don’t watch this. If you like sappy movies or have kids/nieces/nephews/little cousins/babysitting clients, watch it on Christmas Eve. What I’m saying is it will either make you choke up cry, or choke up vomit. Seriously though, anybody else out there know what I’m talking about?

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Ahhh, the meat of Christmas season lies in this Chevy Chase movie that is stuff of xmas legend. For me, it boils down to a collection of classic scenes, less than a story as a whole. The one where Chevy uses a greased saucer to bolt down a hill, the one with “Mele Kalikimaka”, the one with the exploding christmas tree, the one with the sewage, the one with the christmas lights. You know what I’m talking about. I flew to LA last week and this was on the entertainment system - I almost flipped my lid, I got so excited. This is a must watch every year.

  6. One Magic Christmas is a staple in my house at Christmas. Half the family begs to watch it because Gidian is so sweet and my mom especially loves the North Pole stuff. But the other half of our family begs NOT to watch it because the first hour is super depressing.

  7. X-mas Vacation of course (the scene where Chevy gets his x-mas bonus cheque and goes apeshit stands out).

Scrooged is my ultimate x-mas movie.

Bill Murray is in top form in this. Watch both ‘em every year.
