After being run off the road by Rebekah during the finale of The Vampires Season 3, Elena wakes up to find Damon and Stefan sitting in her room. They fill her in on Meredith’s involvement with her injuries and Damon saving Matt over Elena. Shocked, Elena cries that she was ready to die. Dude, you’re 18! How were you ready to die? Too bad she wasn’t ready to swim out of the damn truck instead.

Damon, no big shocker, blames Stefan for Elena’s sorta death. Expect this to carry on forever. Literally.
After the late Alaric (ugh, so handsome) outted all his vampy peeps to the council, the town pastor is on a witch hunt, um, vampire hunt to clean up Mystic Falls. He starts with Mystic Falls mayor and mama to Tyler, Carol Lockwood. Next, he and his hired goons strip Sherriff Forbes of her badge, knowing they both have vampire children that they’ve been helping hide. The pastor’s next stop is the hospital, where he cleans out Meredith’s blood supply and instructs her to clean out her desk.

At the Gilbert house, Elena take Stefan’s advice and holds off eating blood in hopes that there will be another option. To pass the time, she begins remembering all of the memories that Damon compelled her to forget, including meeting him first and hearing him tell her that he loved her and that she should pick Stefan.

Her sweet memories are interrupted when she finds Stefan being held at gun point by the pastor and his men, who quickly grab Elena and Stefan and take them to the pastor’s farm.

Elena’s bestie Bonnie isn’t having a great day either. After helping Klaus and putting him in Tyler’s body, Klaus wants his old form back, but Bonnie wants to spend her energy and magic on keeping Elena human. She points out that keeping Elena alive means and endless supply of blood for his hybrid army and Klaus agrees to give Bonnie more time. He’s so friendly.

After visiting Matt in the hospital, Caroline is finally ready to flee Mystic Falls, this time without Tyler, but gets as far as her porch before the pastor and his men stick her with a needle full of vervane.

She’s thrown in the back of a truck next to Rebekah, who was staked through the window of her own house. Mystic Falls is no longer the vampire retirement community it once was.

Klaus, in Tyler’s body, manages to derail the van and rescue Caroline, but leaves his sister behind and give away his identity only to her. Super harsh.

Caroline gets about five feet away from the wreck and jumps Klaus, thinking he’s Tyler. But when Klaus refers to Caroline as ‘love’, her vampy senses begin to tingle and she quickly realizes that her boyfriend is still kinda dead.

Bonnie and Jeremy try to save Elena from crossing fully into the land of the dead with dark magic. Well, Jeremy mostly just stands there and looks concerned.

Bonnie crosses over to the dead and tries to bring Elena back to the living with her, but Bonnie’s Gran appears and tells her granddaughter to leave the black magic alone.

Klaus/Tyler and Caroline find Bonnie and Jeremy and Klaus demands that Bonnie give him his body back. Scared to upset the spirits again, Bonnie refuses, but when Klaus begins to literally rip Tyler’s heart out of his chest (EW), Bonnie agrees and does the spell. That’s quite the bargaining tool. Unfortunately for Bonnie, the spirits punish Bonnie’s Gran for Bonnie’s black magic. So, did they just rekill a dead witch? I’m confused, but relieved that Tyler’s body is still intact. It’s a good body.

Locked up in the pastor’s barn, Rebekah, Elena and Stefan are all suffering the effects of being surrounded by vervane. Elena, who didn’t feed, is slowly dying in front of Stefan and Rebakah, although only one of them really cares.

Just to make his guilt trip over telling Elena to not feed even longer, Elena, dying in a cell next to Stefan, tells him that she was on the bridge to come back to him. Finally, Rebekah takes pity on Elena.

She helps Stefan distract one of the guards long enough to kill him and get Elena the human blood that she needs to transition into a vampire.

Matt manages to get out of his guilt-ridden depression over Elena dying instead of him long enough to guess that the pastor is holding Stefan and Elena at his farm. He and Damon head out of get their friends back, with Damon using Matt as bait to coerce the guards out of the house. Instead of running to his friends after destroying the guards, Damon begins strangling Matt and would have killed him if vampire-Elena didn’t save the day.

Rebekah, enraged that her own brother saved Caroline and not her, finds Klaus back in his own bod and destroys his supply of Elena’s hybrid blood. Klaus strangles his sister and then leaves her whimpering on the floor, telling Rebekah that she means nothing to him. Dude, you’ve killed her like 50 times. Saying she means nothing to you isn’t the revelation you think it is.

Finally safe from the pastor and his men, Elena enjoys her first sunrise as a vampire with Stefan after he gives her the daylight ring that Bonnie crafted for her best friend. So, they’re back together? Forever? Like, for-ev-er?

Having been defeated by the vampires, the pastor decides to take a different approach and does the darkest, most upsetting thing I’ve ever seen on TVD. The council members and their families gather unknowingly in the pastor’s house, which he sets on fire with them inside, killing innocent men, women and children. So it’s gonna be that kind of a season.
