Meredith is hoping that Alaric’s condition is medical so that she can treat it and gives him a series of tests. Meredith’s grandmother told her about Samantha Gilbert, so when Alaric explained his ring to Meredith she began to suspect the deaths in Mystic Falls were because of him and his death-defying accessory.

While in the MRI machine Alaric sees a different face looking back at him in the mirror, but says nothing to Meredith and Eleana, worried he’ll be confirming that he’s crazy.

All the results come back as negative and Alaric still thinks it was someone else behind the killings. But to be safe he gives Eleana his Gilbert ring.

While picking up Alaric at the hospital, Eleana goes after Damon for making Stefan feed on a woman outside of the pub the night before. Damon explains that Stefan needs to learn control, but Eleana thinks he needs a better teacher. I think they just need to get it on already.

Bonnie’s mother is still trying to transition into becoming a vampire, but becomes defeated when she can’t feel the earth anymore.

Bonnie explains to Caroline that witches have a connection to the earth and Abby lost that when she died and became a vampire. Then she brings a flower back to life. Being a witch is neat.

Caroline talks to Jamie about avoiding Abby, but soon realizes that he’s scared of his step-mother. Can’t really blame him.

Jamie finally decides that it’s safe to come in the house and apologizes to Abby for hiding. But before she can stop herself, she bites Jamie. Thankfully, Bonnie swoops in a stops Abby by giving her brain aneurysms.

Freaked out over biting her step-son (it happens), Bonnie is worried that her mother will run again.

Alaric and Meredith join Damon to check out the rebuilding of the old Wickory Bridge, but they bail when Alaric realizes he’s forgotten the historic sign and doesn’t want to face another signal that he’s losing it.

Damon spots his old friend Sage, who is back in Mystic Falls and looking for Rebekah’s brother Finn, who skipped town with his brother’s after their mother tried to have them all killed. What’s her connection with Finn? He seemed like an odd duck and she seems normal…for a vampire. Sage tells Damon that Finn is her one true love and she’s been waiting for him ever since Klaus locked Finn away. Sage thinks Rebekah knows where her brother is and Damon wants to know why she’s still in town, so they devise a plan for Damon to seduce Rebekah and get into her head. You may be an original Rebekah, but you do have eyes. Good luck!

Rebekah arrives at the Salvatore house and Damon and Sage begin drinking and dancing to make her jealous.

It takes about one song and one dead piano player for Rebekah to give into Damon. She lasted longer than I would have.

After Damon has his way with Rebekah she passes out, giving Sage opportunity to read her mind.

Through her kisses, Sage shows Damon that Rebekah is looking for another white oak tree.

Damon gets to work looking for the milling record business archives and instructs Sage to keep Rebekah distracted. You know what’s distracting? Damon half naked in a towel. Damon finds the record from 1912 and sees that the white oak tree was used to build the Wickory Bridge.

Damon tells Sage about his findings on the Wickory Bridge, but his plan to destroy whats left of white oak is interrupted by Sage threatening to kill him if he goes through with his plan, which would mean there was something in the world that could kill her beloved Finn. Damon makes a deal with Sage that if she helps him kill Rebekah he won’t do anything to hurt Finn.

Ready to put his plan into action, Damon gets dressed only to find Sage gone.

He speeds to the bridge and finds Rebekah and Sage burning down the white oak tree.

Sage got inside Damon’s head and found out that all the originals are connected, meaning she knew that if Rebekah died then Finn would die too. Damon tells Sage the truth in that Finn was willing to let himself be killed by his mother instead of waiting around for her to find him.

Eleana finds Stefan home when she drops by to pick up a book on Samantha and pries about Stefan’s attempt to drink human blood moderately. Stefan tells Eleana that he read the book on Samantha and learned that there’s nothing that can be done to help Alaric if he’s in the same dead-ring boat.

Alaric starts reading through his police reports and explains all his indiscretions to Meredith. He admits that there is something in the reports that Meredith doesn’t know, and it’s that Alaric killed her cousin Logan after he became a vampire. She seems to take the news well.

Abby thinks that Bonnie can reverse whatever is happening with Alaric through a spell and Bonnie finally breaks her silence and talks to Eleana, giving her instructions on the spell. Bonnie needs something personal that Alaric wore before he put on the ring and he suggests his wedding ring back at his apartment. Meredith stays in the Gilbert house with Alaric while Eleana goes to Alaric’s apartment.

Stefan is waiting for Eleana at Alaric’s apartment and tells Eleana that he read more about Samantha Gilbert. He discovered that Samantha killed two more people while in the insane asylum and was under suicide watch, meaning the violent behaviour can still happen even when the person takes off the ring.

Eleana and Stefan search for Alaric’s wedding ring and instead find bloody picture of Alaric’s victims.

They also find a note Alaric left for Jeremy telling him to carry on his work with the second Gilbert ring and finish cleansing the council. Is Alaric ring-crazy or regular-crazy?

Back at home, Alaric falls asleep on the couch and wakes up in a crazed state, grabbing needles from Meredith’s purse. Alaric goes after Meredith in the kitchens and cuts her with a knife, but she manages to fight him off and lock herself in the bathroom. Yes! Always run to the bathroom. They have locks!

Eleana and Stefan come home to find Alaric calm and collected and saying that Meredith got called into work at the hospital.

Eleana lies and says that Stefan isn’t with her and lies about not finding Alaric’s ring, knowing it would tell him that she found the pictures and the note as well. Before Alaric can attack Eleana, Stefan throws a sleeper hold on him.

Stefan and Eleana find Meredith bleeding to death in the bathroom, but thankfully Stefan is able to control himself and not drain her.

Instead, Stefan cures Meredith with some of his very own brand of vampy blood.

Alaric wakes up the next morning to find Damon in his room (lucky!) and Damon explains that he’s going to be under house arrest in his loft for a while.

Bonnie and Eleana finally talk and Bonnie says that she and her mom are working through things. Eleana,
still feeling guilty over Abby being turned into a vampire, begins to cry and Bonnie forgives her friend.
Caroline and Jamie are working in the garden and seem to really hit it off. Caroline goes inside to check on Abby and finds her writing a good-bye letter.

Caroline says she can help Abby be a vampire, but she needs to figure out how to be a parent on her own. Caroline tries to convince Abby that she needs to make things work with Bonnie, but Abby’s mind is made up. She really sucks.

Alone and lonely, Eleana checks in on her brother Jeremy. Yay Jeremy! She lies and says that everything is fine at home, which couldn’t be further from the truth.

Thankfully, things are much better at the Salvatore household. Damon knew the whole time he had the sign that Alaric forgot at the beginning of the episode. It’s made from the same oak that was used to build the bridge – you know, the white oak that can kill an original? The Salvatore brothers ready themselves to put their ‘Kill Originals Part 2’ plan into action.
