Richard Ashcroft @ The Hammersmith Apollo, 2006
According to the NME, all four original members of The Verve have reunited for an upcoming set of shows in the UK. It’ll be the first time the guys have played together in over a decade.
It seems like EVERY seminal British band is getting back together, if only for brief tours or live appearances (The Police, The Libertines, Ride, Blur), but this would be quite epic!
It’s no secret that no one frontman Richard Ashcroft’s solo efforts have been a little…erm…lacking in quality and pizazz. There certainly haven’t been any Verve-esque hits, with the exception of maybe C’mon People, Science Of Silence or Check The Meaning, but that’s even stretching it. Simon Tong and Simon Jones were both in The Shining, but if you hadn’t heard, that band only put out one quality track (Quicksilver) and their lone album True Skies can be found stinking up $1 used CD bins from here to Leicester. Simon Tong is in Damon Albarn’s new group The Good, The Bad And The Queen, but a Verve reunion would bring him so much more. And Nick McCabe…well, what exactly has he done for any of us lately?
In related news, feel free to join my Facebook group “Why Is Richard Ashcroft Always Barefoot?”
Now off, all of you – go participate in the eternal/impossible debate over which Verve album you love best between the three (A Storm In Heaven, A Northern Soul or Urban Hymns) while you anticipate the reunion tour. It’s maddening.
PS: Wikipedia was down briefly just now and I had a mild heart attack.
