The Wedge A.M. News Round Up: Big Day For Album Releases, Including Wilco, Dum Dum Girls, and Twin Sister

Today marks a big day for album releases, unless you’ve already illegally downloaded all of them. Nirvana released the Nevermind 20th Anniversary edition, which Pitchfork awarded the rare rating of 10. Chicago rock veterans Wilco released their ninth album, The Whole Love and L.A. girl group Dum Dum Girls dropped their sophomore album, Only In Dreams via Sub Pop. Two debut LP’s also came out today, including Twin Sister’s In Heaven and Youth Lagoon’s Year of Hibernation. Toronto’s indie folk darlings, Ohbijou released their third effort, Metal Meets and Vancouver’s Dan Mangan also released his third album, Oh Fortune via Arts & Crafts.

Smashing Pumpkins will be releasing their ninth studio album, Oceania later this year and frontman Billy Corgan said if the album “hits the same wall a lot of the other stuff has hit, we’re going to have to step back and really evaluate where we’re going.” So, pretty much if Oceania doesn’t garner success and critical acclaim, the band might be heading towards a hiatus or break up. But Corgan does seem confident about the new album, saying it’s “some of the most melodic work I’ve ever done, but somehow it rocks pretty hard, too.” He added, “the general description I’ve heard from people who have heard it is that it reminds them of the Pumpkins in the way they like the Pumpkins, but somehow it sounds new.” (Via NME)

In 2007, Marion frontman Jaime Harding underwent open heart surgery and now that he’s healthy, the 90s rock band are getting back together. The band includes original members Harding, Phil Cunningham, Anthony Grantham, and Julian Phillips, along with a new drummer, Jack Mitchell. Harding said, “Marion are starting the next chapter and we are ready to reclaim the most exciting live group title for good.” He added, “You can tell all the doubters who listen to todays bland and passionless music I TOLD YOU SO!!!! Marion are tops!!!” Here’s hoping that Marion lives up to the hype that Harding just created. (Via NME)

Last night, Radiohead performed and were interviewed on “The Colbert Report”, which marked the first time in 18 years that they appeared on a late-night television show. They performed all of six songs, including four from their most recent album, The King Of Limbs, as well as their new single “The Daily Mail” and Kid A‘s “The National Anthem.” You can watch the hour-long episode over at The Comedy Network.
