The Wedge P.M. News Round Up: This Mortal Coil box set announced

September 19th, 2011

4AD has announced that the long overdue reissue of This Mortal Coil’s three studio albums will see the light of day in November. Packaged in an four-disc box set, It’ll End In Tears, Filigree & Shadow and Blood have been remastered from the original analogue studio tapes in HD-CD. In addition, a fourth disc titled Dust & Guitars, will include all of This Mortal Coil’s singles, as well as an unreleased track, “We Never Danced.” Says the press release, “They have been manufactured in Japan and packaged in gatefold ‘paper’ sleeves, accompanied by inner bags and new booklets. The artwork for each album has been re-designed by Ivo Watts-Russell and Vaughan Oliver at V23, and is based around Nigel Grierson’s original photography, incorporating graphics that unify the look of the re-issues.” Furthermore, for all the sterophiles out there, the set will also be released in real HD digital (96khz / 24bit) on an Audio Blu-Ray disc entitled Tears In The Drop Box. An update has been given on the whereabouts of Jason Molina, songwriter behind Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. Secretly Canadian posted a statement, explaining that Molina has been in and out of rehab treatment, and is now in need of financial help to pay the bills. “Many of you have inquired as to Jason’s whereabouts and well-being since he canceled his tours with Will Johnson in 2009,” the post reads. “Over the last two years Jason has been in and out of rehab facilities and hospitals in England, Chicago, Indianapolis, and New Orleans. It has been a very trying time for Jason, his friends, and his family. Although no one can be sure what the future holds, we feel very encouraged by the recent steps Jason has taken on the road towards becoming healthy and productive once again. Unfortunately, because he has no medical insurance, he has accrued substantial medical bills. We are asking all friends of Jason’s music to come together with a showing of financial support for him.” Payments can be made via Paypal here. (Via Secretly Canadian)

It’s too early to call it a feud, but in a recent interview, Jonathan Pierce, frontman for The Drums dissed his former tourmates Kings of Leon big time. Asked about what he learned touring with the Southern rock giants, Pierce responded, “I would advise them to split up and stop making music. I don’t think they’re really helping anybody – they’ve never made a song that’s really touched me in any way… They’re very American bar rock and it’s not interesting, it doesn’t affect me at all. That ‘Sex on Fire’ song is one of the worst songs I’ve heard in my life. I would advise them to call it quits, definitely the best thing they can do.” Hopefully there is some form of retaliation on KoL’s part, so we can break out the popcorn. (Via Clickmusic)
