One year from today, March 29, 2013, sees the 20th anniversary of Suede’s self-titled debut album. Setting the stage for Britpop, Suede took the UK by storm both critically and commercially, becoming the fastest-selling debut album in a decade. With its edgy, romanticized themes of sex, death, gender-bending, drugs and violence, it was controversial yet wildly influential. To this day it still sounds remarkably relevant, as heard on last year’s triple-disc reissue and the band’s recent string of reunion shows. Visually, Suede hit the mark with the video for “Metal Mickey,” which depicts a young butcher girl being forced into prostitution thanks to an androgynous pimp.
