The Wedge: Watch an interview with of Montreal

For the last 15 years, Athens, Georgia native Kevin Barnes has been making the most wonderfully weird and exuberantly vivid music out there under the name of Montreal. Originally an associate of the Elephant 6 collective, the band experienced a breakthrough with 2007′s Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, which allowed Barnes and his merry cast of characters to crossover into mainstream culture. Since then, Susan Sarandon has partaken in a peformance, they’ve collaborated with Janelle Monáe and Solange, and the band have helped usher in some of the most creative ways to release music in the download age, packaging albums with such unlikely objects as a tote bag and a paper lantern.
The Wedge caught up with Kevin and his brother, artist David Barnes, to discuss, among other things, the proper spelling of of Montreal, the prolific nature of the music, David’s new book, What’s Weird?, and how talented Susan Sarandon is spanking pigs.
