One of my most favourite books as a kid was made into a movie in 1990, which became one of my fave childhood flicks. I speak of the impeccable The Witches, written by Roald Dahl and later directed by Nicolas Roeg, starring Anjelica Huston.
Well, like everything else that ever existed, The Witches is about to get the remake treatment. Yep, Guillermo Del Toro (writer of Hellboy) has finished a screenplay and will direct a stop-motion version of the story.
Now on one hand, I appreciate any love for this amazing tale but on the other hand, I have so little patience left for Hollywood’s consistent recycling. There’s such a fine line now between homage, honouring, easy money and exploitation. But I don’t see this project as lazy, cause I think Del Toro will treat this movie right, and with respect - I expect it to be appropriately creepy and beautiful. Wouldn’t it be amazing if it took a Pan’s Labyrinth-like direction? I will totally go see it - even though Anjelica Huston is the best Grand High Witch to live, ever.
