The XX win the Mercury Prize

September 8th, 2010

The Barclaycard Mercury Prize is an annual music prize that recognizes the best album of the year from the United Kingdom and Ireland. This year’s winner was The XX for their fantastic 2009 debut album, XX.

The £20,000 award was given out last night during a gala that saw the likes of The XX perform as well as fellow nominees Wild Beasts, Biffy Clyro, Mumford and Sons and Villagers.

About the win, The XX’s soft-spoken frontman Oliver Sim seemed a bit surprised, saying, “I don’t know what we were expecting but we weren’t expecting this.”

Previous winners of the prize include Arctic Monkeys, Elbow, PJ Harvey, Klaxons, Franz Ferdinand and Dizzee Rascal.
