List This!
Eh-o, my name here is geoffm and I’m starting work on the New Music as a producer in the New Year. I thought this, my inaugural post on the New Music blog could serve somewhat as an informal introduction (I’ll be writing plenty more once the show gets back in action early next month).
I’ve really noticed something since starting at Much waaay back in 2004 – the kids love lists (and by the kids I mean, well everyone). Practically every show on this fine network is based in someway on a list (Countdown, It List, Top 10s, One Hit Wonders, the list goes on…). And if the show’s not based on a list, it’s at least organized by a list, or what we tv folks like to call a rundown (which is a big long list of everything that’s in a show… essentially, another list).
I could rant about lists forever, but what’s brought my attention to the tremendous fascination with lists right now - is the roll-out of the annual best of lists (like you haven’t noticed!). And while sometimes this friendly activity of compiling and sharing gets a little out of hand (I read one blog that went so far as listing the top 10 songs on the Arcade Fire’s “Funeral”) I must admit, I’m a sucker for a good list. A good friend even gave me the Book of Lists (Canadian edition) for Christmas!
When it comes to lists, the annual best of lists really are the fillet of lists. It seems natural too that at this time of the year, we reflect on the past 12 months and of course, chapterize our lives once again, and prepare to start anew come January 1st (isn’t it strange how we operate?).
So, like the sucker I am, and well, to serve in part as an informal introduction to the newest producer on the New Music block, I offer a few lists of my own…
