Axl Rose Is A Tipsy Puppy

axl1.jpg

Axl Rose has just topped my list of "Musicians I Fear The Most." Why? Because he was arrested this morning in Stockholm (a place where they usually only arrest perpetrators of genocide and habitual litterbugs) for allegedly biting a hotel security guard in the leg.

I mean, biting a leg? A stranger's leg? Who knows where that leg has been? If I seem unconcerned about the guard, it's because even if Axl's teeth broke skin, the quart of whiskey in his mouth would have instantly cleaned the cut.

But shoot, what if some of the bellhop's leg juice trickled down Axl's throat? That security guard's blood could be dirtier than a ravine pond. Risk-taking violence like that takes a special kind of crazy.

It takes Axl crazy.

Musicians I Fear The Most*

1. Axl Rose (drunky leg-biter)

2. Ike Turner (temper, temper)

3. Sid Vicious (the spitting, not the killing)

4. Annie Lennox (bostaff)

5. Bing Crosby (ask Gary Crosby)

6. Keith Moon (manslaughter, drumslaughter)

7. Jerry Lee Lewis (once shot his bassist in the chest)

8. GG Allin (GG Allin)

9. Shakira (commands stampeding army of war ponies)

10. Prince (sexual voodoo)

All the Gore-y Details

world satellite.jpg

Last night I saw Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth." You have to see it. It's about climate change and the absolute crisis we're facing. No, it isn't boring, no it isn't depressing - when you're given straight-up science, you feel armed with knowledge and it's inspiring. All the stats and facts will stun you.

Just now, I visited the website and used their carbon calculator to see how much carbon dioxide I produce as an individual each year. I'm pretty committed to riding a bike around and not owning a car so my number was low but the movie is inspiring me to do more.

If "An Inconvenient Truth" isn't screening in your city, at least visit the website! You will be doing yourself a favour.

10 Years of Reasonable Doubt

Jay_Z_-_Reasonable_Doubt-front.jpg

Looks like your man Hov might be hitting the stage again. The greatest rapper alive is going to be doing a one-night show in NYC celebrating the 10th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt. The best thing about this show is that he's only doing tracks from the Reasonable Doubt album. I've got my fingers crossed that Sauce Money will show up for a quick appearance like he did on 'Bring it On' from the album.

Summer Summer Summer Time...

lupe.jpg

Good news folks, summer is here! So with the good weather comes the good parties, concerts, festival, shows, whatever!

One show that just got announced late last week is Lupe Fiasco's appearance at The Tonic. Lupe's 'Food & Liquor' album was slated for an early summer release but it got leaked and now he's back in the studio re-working the whole thing.

Regardless of all the good shows, probably the best thing about the summer is my birthday. Although it passed a little while ago I thought I might share a couple pics of the surprise party and MFbirthday cake. Thanks NewMusic/MuchNews/The Loop Crew!

The band premiered a handful of new songs on KEXP radio in New York about two weeks back. The session isn’t up in their archives yet, but from what I remember – Keep It Amazed and So Far We Are were definite stand outs. And if you’re feeling resourceful, an mp3 of Also Ran is floating around the net and is highly worth seeking out.

The Kicks are on tour with the Futureheads this month and are planning to head out on a headlining tour later in the summer. We've got confirmation one of those dates (via Chromewaves) for our fair city of Toronto on August 4th at Lee’s Palace.

The waiting continues…

POLARIS!

Big ups to Manny for getting the blog back in gear… there’s been a bunch of hot new spring tracks I’ve been wanting to write about – and I will soon, but first some more newsworthy stuff…

polaris logo.gif

I’m sure the blogosphere and everyone and their brother are spreading the word about this but – the official announcement for the Polaris Music Prize was released earlier today. In a nutshell, it’s a Canuck version of the UK’s Nationwide Mercury Prize and the now defunct Shortlist Prize – to celebrate the best Canadian album of the year (released between June 1st 2005 – May 31st 2006). Ten Canadian records chosen strictly on their creative quality will be named to the shortlist on July 4th – with the winner being announced in September. The jury is composed of local and national music journalists and broadcasters (including yours truly). Hopefully it’ll give a big boost to some of our great unsung heroes.
