September 24, 2006Sorry
I haven't bloged in ages, many apologies. Thanks to Geoff for holding it down for the last couple of weeks (maybe months).
With that being said, our new season is in full swing and you can expect a lot of cool interviews from us in the near future and a brand new host! Yes, I said a new host! Our new addition to the team makes her first apperance on our V-fest special (Mon Sept. 25th @930PM) and should be joing the blog sometime this week.
That's it for me, I'm going to enjoy the rest of this rainy sunday with the new Lupe Fiasco record. The young chi-town native is going to be featured on our show again so check out our listings for when it drops.

September 21, 2006Dear Asobi,
As we, the mighty NewMusic team get back into the swing of things for a fall season of new shows, we're also going to try and share more exciting musical discoveries...

Last night i saw fantastic band from New York City called ASOBI SEKSU. their music is noisy and fun, tremedously poppy and very loud in just the way that'd you'd want a 'shoegazer' type band to sound. Asobi Seksu reach beyond their influences though. their excellent new record Citrus is extremely easy to digest b/c it is so poppy, but also b/c of front-woman Yuki's sexy, breezy vocals. and did i mention she sings the odd track in Japanese? Yesssss!!!

head over to their myspace and download a few tracks off Citrus or open up this handy jukebox to preview to rest of the album. one more thing before we go...

the NewMusic team feels it necessary to mention how much we're loving the new Dears record Gang of Losers. do check it out asap. and do stay tuned to the NewMusic next month for a new feature on the Dears.
in the meantime, check out the wicked new video to Ticket to Imortality on MuchAXS

September 20, 2006Undeniable
Hope you guys have been enjoying the new shows… or at least the new show that aired last week. We’re just polishing off an awesome VFest special – the first to feature our amazingly talented new host (bet you can’t wait to see who it is!) – which premiers next Monday (Sept.25). There’s loads of bands in the show plus some really great features on Eagles of Death Metal, Buck 65, Wolfmother and the inimitable Flaming Lips – who told us the story behind their killer live show (quite interesting, something i’d never heard before).
right - but the real reason I’m posting today is b/c of The Killers.

You may recall about 4 months ago, Brandon Flowers declared their new record Sam’s Town to be “one of the best albums in the past 20 years.” Sure, that’s a pretty cocky remark. But I for one believe its good to have a little ego in rock n’ roll – plus, he’d already written, recorded and heard their new single When You Were Young about a gazillion times. I’m approaching the gazillionth listen and still find it undeniable awesome.

I’m no Killers lover or hater… I didn’t buy Hot Fuss, nor have I even heard the whole record, but like most people I totally got into the singles. I mean, you simply can’t deny Mr. Brightside. You can’t deny All These Things I’ve Done. I’m one to believe that if the song kicks ass, it kicks ass. Kelly, Hilary, the Killers – it doesn’t matter who the artist is.
Getting back to Mr. Flowers’ big statement – could he possibly be right? We’re all well aware that The Killers hype machine is in full-tilt. Six weeks ago they released just a 40 second snippet of WYWY to whet our appetites, then came the full song, then a teaser for the video (are you kidding me!?!), then the big-budget slick as sh*t full-length video. Not to mention the secret listening parties they’ve been having throughout the summer for industry insiders and bloggers and such. Now, its myspace shows and a totally sold-out club tour. There’s no question, these guys are going to sell a truckload of records – BUT again could Brandon Flowers be right?

I’ve already made it clear - When You Were Young is undeniably awesome, but earlier today I heard a few other tracks off Sam’s Town. While It’s still too early to tell if it’s “one of the best albums in 20 years” caliber – the new songs: Bones, Read My Mind, Midnight Show and Sam’s Town are incredibly tight and focused tracks. They’re big and boisterous songs, some even bigger than the singles off Hot Fuss, and with even more of the Killers trademark gloss. It’s clear the Killers (and producers and all) know what they’re doing.
Some of the kids around the office and around town seem to want to hate the Killers. I can agree, they’ve got a cheesy side and sometimes come off as real douches. I try to avoid the argument as stay as neutral as possible, but when it comes down to it, a good pop song is a good pop song, and denying yourself of that is the stupidest thing you can do.
Check out the video for When You Were Young on MuchAXS and (fingers crossed) stay tuned for a Killers feature on the NewMusic next month…

September 15, 2006MATES IN CANADA!!!
hey folks, hope you're all well and all and hanging in there. me and manny have been having a tough time living the high life in Ontario's capital as the annual tiff takes the city by storm. but no need to worry, we'll be cool.
it's been a pure all out assault of cool films (personal favorites include: Brand Upon A Brain, The Fall and Sharkwater), parties and killer shows (Phoenix, French Kicks etc). this weekend it all winds down with two more awesome gigs, NewMusic favorites Mates of State on Saturday (and tonight in Montreal!) and the big Tribe show on Sunday - which Kerry C. dubbed the hottest ticket of the year.
but speaking of the former and to whet your Mates of State appetites - check out the awesome feature we ran on them earlier this summer. bon appetit!
