December 15th, 2010

It all began in 1983 with Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Music videos have been trying to turn themselves into short films for years. Some succeed and some fall short. Let’s have a look at some of the best short film music videos from 2010!
Runaway – Kanye West
This video is only a snippet of the 37 minute film that used music from West’s 2010 My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The film stars West and rumoured girlfriend Selita Ebanks as a phoenix that has fallen from the sky. An interesting film with an amazing soundtrack.
Telephone – Lady Gaga and Beyonce
One of the most talked about videos in 2010 between two of the world’s biggest artists was also one of the strangest videos. Quentin Tarantino plus product placement plus jail courtyards plus murder scene plus penis rumours plus a whole lot of WTF.
Suburbs – Arcade Fire
The first of three war-time inspired videos on the list, Arcade Fire enlisted the help of critically acclaimed film director Spike Jonze to create the video for their song, Suburbs. Although the ending to the video is somewhat confusing (is the kid with short hair the same kid, but with longer hair, from the beginning of the video?), but the main message is clear; war is hell.
Born Free – M.I.A.
One of the most controversial videos of 2010, M.I.A.’s commentary on war was too much for YouTube and the video was banned. A video with an extremely important message, the violent and disturbing short film can be viewed here. Viewer discretion is heavily advised.
Right Thru Me – Nicki Minaj
Trinidad-born, New York-raised Nicki Minaj started out acting while attending her high school for the performing arts. In Right Thru Me we get to see some of Minaj’s acting talents, which the rapper has stated we will see more of in the future.
Hurricane – 30 Seconds to Mars
Jared Leto decided to combine his two loves of acting and music in this 13 minute video for 30 Seconds to Mars’ Hurricane. Too bad he forget to get a script that made sense.
Lonely’s Lunch – You Say Party
You Say Party’s first video since the sudden passing of band member Devon Clifford is an impressive piece of art. Shot in India, the video follows a woman that appears to be part of a government resistance uprising. Unlike other videos on this list (ahem, 30 Seconds), I wish that this video extended beyond the four minute song.
