On Friday, Ellen Page spoke at a Human Rights Campaign Event in Las Vegas and revealed that she is gay. The Canadian actress spoke for eight minutes, during which time she applauded the work being done by the HRC and the young activists in the room who have had to endure growing up in a society that often does not accept them.
At the event for LGBTQ youth, Page said “I’m here today because I am gay and because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.” She name checked other celebs who have bravely come out, including football player Michael Smith and fellow Canadians Tegan and Sara Quinn.
During her speech, Page talked about the struggles she’s faced over the years, saying “I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered, and my relationship suffered.”
In the simplest of terms, the most convenient definition, here is what we think of your speech, Ms. Page.
THE HIGHEST OF FIVES FOR YOU, ELLEN PAGE.
