Their band name and song title might not exactly be unique. In about five seconds, for me, it conjured up memories of:

a) a 1987 Steven Spielberg movie;
b) a Smash Mouth song;
c) a Rage Against the Machine song;
d) about 25 other lazily-titled pieces of pop culture

But don’t judge “Walking on a Dream” by Empire of the Sun for its lack of surface imagination; they just saved up that imagination for their actual content.

Their sound also inspires a lot of comparisons — Phoenix and Supertramp, to name a couple easy targets — but “Walking on a Dream,” the lead single from the Australian group’s forthcoming debut album, is one of those great pop songs that makes you want to just stick your music player of choice on repeat for a little while. Then gets stuck in your head for the few days after that.
