I’m either too young, too old, or too not-American, but I’d never heard of Mark Mulcahy (frontman of the group Miracle Legion, for those whose memories go back to the late 80′s) until recently, when Pitchfork started announcing the release of this compilation, Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy.

Who is this? you ask. And why should I care?

The compilation is being put together to help raise some cash for Mulcahy, who recently lost his wife and now has to raise their three-year-old twins by himself. *Tear!* Surprisingly, or maybe not so much, a lot of big names have signed on to contribute tracks to this baby, including Frank Black (of the Pixies), Michael Stipe(of R.E.M), Dinosaur Jr., and Ben Kweller.

Buuut, today a track from the compilation was released, and because it was Thom Yorke‘s interpretation of a Mulcahy tune called “All for the Best”, I took a listen.

Guys: it’s so awesome. It’s like you could tack it onto the end of Kid A as a bonus bonus track, right after “Motion Picture Soundtrack”. Yorke replaces the original tune’s guitars with percussion and electronic waves*, and some delicious vocal harmonies mid-track.

Just so we’re clear, in this case I am not ashamed to be a bandwagon jumper, because this song is really good, and you can stream it at this website right here!

The album, if you’re interested, will be out on September 29th, and will probably be available through Amazon.

*This is, in fact, the actual scientific term for them**.
** This is, in fact, a joke.
