Three MCs And One VJ

May 3rd, 2004

Went to NYC to interview the Beastie Boys with Jenn Hollett last week. They were inspiring! We visited their (very cool) studio, located in an industrial, non-descript part of Manhattan. If you watch the new video closely, you can catch a glimpse of it in the 70’s-era police station scenes with the wood panelling and glass - That’s their offices! We appreciated the old-school, retro vibe of it all, except maybe for the fact that the building’s elevator was on the fritz.

The guys were really low-key and friendly, and there were no managers or assistants hanging around. After our interview, I decided that they seem to have figured out the ideal way to be a successful artist. They live relatively normally, doing what they love and making good cash all at the same time. Plus they make incredible music. All hail the Beastie Boys! Another insider tidbit - it appears that the Beastie Boys quite like goldfish. There wasn’t much clutter in their offices, but they did have a cardboard box full of bright orange, squishy plastic goldfish. But why? Maybe they will feature in a future video? Hmmmm. Stay tuned…

I’ll be checking out a fabulous event the first weekend in June: Mutek. It happens annually in beautiful downtown Montreal. It features the world’s top electronic artists, from straight-ahead techno to glitchy experimentalists. I’m a huge fan of Richie Hawtin, aka Plastikman, who is going to be doing a LIVE performance for the first time in 9 years!!! Herbert will also be headlining. Anyone who likes their blips and bleeps should consider attending.

Lastly, these are some people I know who have entertaining blogs: www.strongsmell.com, www.hotsandwich.com, www.gorsht.com, www.collisiondetection.com and www.spoothe.com. Visit them, perhaps you will enjoy.
