Three Things To Know About This Year’s Oscar Awards

February 17th, 2012

As the 84th Academy Awards approach us this weekend, the Sunday night event will bring us some good ole’ Hollywood black-tie excitement, as all of the film industry’s best gather to give praise for one night. Hosted by Billy Crystal, this year’s show has some dynamic angles to look at. Here’s our top three:

1) Battle For Best Actor

There’s two reasons why Best Actor is worth really paying attention to this year: George Clooney and Brad Pitt competing head-to-head for the first time. Clooney’s The Descendents and Pitt’s Money Ball will be an amusing battle between two legendary leading men in Hollywood. Arguably, the top two. Pitt has never won an Oscar before, but Clooney snagged one from his supporting role in 2005’s Syriana. So let the friendly passive-aggressive remarks between the two buddies begin!

2) The Artist’s Cinderella Ride

The Artist came out of nowhere this year after leading actor Jean Dujardin won Best Actor at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Since then, it’s picked up a slew of prestigious awards at the Toronto International Film Festival and Golden Globes, captured the hearts of critics, and has a whopping 10 nominations at this year’s Oscar show.  It’s interesting, because it’s a silent film. Directed Michel Hazanavicius, the movie tells the story about an actor who struggles to adapt to the change in scenery in the 1940’s, when sound was becoming the next direction in film. It’s up against all the industry titans, including Martin Scorsese’s Hugo and Steven Spielberg’s War Horse in Best Picture.

3) The Muppets

The furry entourage has been confirmed to be in the house during the awards, especially since 2011’s The Muppets is nominated for Best Original Song with Man or Muppet . The reason why the Muppets are in this list (besides the fact that they’re the freaking Muppets, and that should be good enough), is because they’ve never won an Oscar before, despite having five previous nominations throughout the years. This year they’re only up against one other film, Rio’s Real in Rio. Can you imagine seeing Kermit and the gang some how being on-stage to accept the award?

Make sure to catch all the hype on Sunday on CTV; Red Carpet Live at 8:00pm ET, and then The 84th Annual Academy Awards at 8:30 pm ET!
