Throwback: Maroon 5 + Phantom Planet

As I was putting together a list of classic back to school videos, I started to reminisce about all the different albums and bands that reminded of that time – Beck’s ‘Midnight Vultures,’ Ryan Adams’ ‘Gold,’ Our Lady Peace ‘Clumsy’ and so on – But the one album that really stuck with me was Phantom Planet’s ‘The Guest’ (yes old school PP which included founding members Jason Schwartzman and Jacque Brautbar). That record defined my summer/back to school year and I completely wore both my album and vhs out. There was a period where I would I watch their video ‘California’ (pre-O.C. fame) on a daily basis. It was their cheery, infectious pop music that got me hooked.

Sidenote: For those of you who don’t know who they are, they’re the band responsible for The O.C. theme song ‘California’…

Because I was in this reminiscent mood I started youtubing some of their videos and what I came across was this pretty cool impromptu performance that they did with the boys of Maroon 5. The two bands covered The Beatles’ song ‘Hey Jude!’

What’s amazing about this performance is that this was done pre-Maroon 5 ‘This Love’ success and probably pre-O.C. success… I just love seeing old footage of Phantomm Planet just rocking out – Seriously, why did Jason Schwartzman have to leave Phantom Planet?
