Thursday Musings: Weezer, Jimmy Eat World & Jordin Sparks

Is the new Weezer album, aka The Red Album (release date: June 17, 2008) going to be any good? All anyone ever seems to reference is The Blue Album and Pinkerton, yet Weezer (and Rivers Cuomo) continue to make music. It’s got all the makings of a blockbuster, but it could easily go wrong:

- All four group members contributing songwriting and lead vocals (first time ever).
- Jacknife Lee (The Hives, R.E.M., Snow Patrol, Editors, Bloc Party, U2) and Rick Rubin (um, everyone) as producers
- Rich Costey as a mixer (My Chemical Romance, Bloc Party, Brand New, Foo Fighters)
- Tons of buzz, hoaxes, leaked info, official statements that were later retracted, everyone with their finger on the pulse waiting for more and more news

What will lead off single Pork And Beans sound like? Have they still got it? Or, like Dan, did you “stop caring about them in grade 8″?

And, all morning I’ve been listening to early Jimmy Eat World and can’t help but wonder if the band should pack it in. Albums 1-4 (self-titled, Static Prevails, Clarity and Bleed American) are all ace, but Futures and Chase This Light have been stinkers (IMO). Also, the interlude from 2:45-3:03 on Clarity just SLAYS me. Thoughts?

Finally, is it wrong that I listened to Jordin Sparks’ album about 10 times through late last night? I mean, I know I’m jet lagged after my recent vacation and all, but holy shit some of the tracks are great (No Air, Tattoo and Freeze). I could do without the album’s seriously weak (lyrics AND melody) final track though - God Loves Ugly. I can’t think of a dumber song name.

I request your opinions immediately.

  1. Their earlier albums may have been better then their newer releases but when you compare anything Weezer or Jimmy Eat World have ever recorded it beats most other new bands hands down, no contest. I welcome anything from artists that can actually write good songs, that’s all that matters.

  2. I liked Jimmy Eat World’s last album - not the new one that just came out. But Futures was good and I think Pitchfork and those other blogs liked it too. Don’t know about Weezer you are right it could go either way like if there are too many stars in a movie it gets watered down and the opposite effect happens!

  3. I’d say that if either band has one more failure (their last two albums being failures IMO) they should “pack it in”.

Saves The Day should also be included in this list.

  4. as long as Weezer continues to make music videos with cute fluffy baby animals, all is good in the world.

    jordin sparks? i’m skeptical.

  5. @Neil - For sure, if someone does something YOU don’t like they should just “pack it in”, after all I’m sure you’re their main source of income with all of the music and concert tickets you purchase.

Playing music is what these people do for a living, it puts a roof over their heads. Saying that they should “pack it in” because you don’t like what they do is stupid. Would you “pack it is” if someone wasn’t down with what you did?

And then you add on Saves The Day… a band without mainstream radio success that aren’t millionaires… nice.
