I got an email last week about Toronto’s status as the fourth biggest city in North America. Sounds about right. So I read it, and it was actually promoting a new Canadian MC called Famous. The video linked is wicked, it’s about time people are calling out Canadian hip-hop issues. Really, Toronto is bigger than Houston, and Houston supported its artists long before the mainstream and they all stayed selling. Why can’t Canada? We ignored Arcade Fire until Americans gave them respect and all of a sudden everyone’s proud because they’re coming from Canada? We should’ve been ashamed that they had no love earlier! I understand sometimes Canadian hip-hop isn’t truly Canadian but there are artists repping. (Just wait for Kardinal to smash the mainstream, it’s happening - you heard it here first) The Gee Wunder video is pure Canada and nice too, or Point Blank “Born And Raised In The Ghetto“, or even (especially!) Classified. Anyway, support local hip-hop, it’s about time someone is calling us out (yes I’m guilty too).
