When Coldplay hit the stage tonight to play a full hour of songs you’ll be seeing the band do what they do best – perform. But that doesn’t mean the four musicians are any slouches when it comes to making music videos. Over five albums we’ve seen some of the most inventive, creative and beautiful videos from Coldplay. Let’s count down the best five!
Don’t miss Rogers Presents: Live In The Lot With Coldplay tonight at 9 pm ET on MuchMusic and MuchMusic.com!
5. Violet Hill
Violet Hill is Coldplay’s first anti-war protest and the band fittingly don matching American Revolution-like outfits for the video. Nothing irritates me more than music video directors disregarding the beat of a song and thankfully one as strong as Violet Hill’s was put front and centre in its accompanying video. Phew.
4. The Scientist
The video begins with Chris Martin laying on a mattress on a sidewalk. How did he get there? We find out in this reverse-narrative video. Take me back to the start, indeed.
3. Trouble
This was the first time fans saw what was the come in Coldplay’s long career of bring innovation and creativity to their music videos. Two dimensional cut outs = who cares about 3D?
2. Fix You
If you’ve ever been to a Coldplay concert then you know the magic of being in an arena full of fans singing along with the bands’ emotional lyrics isn’t something that can be captured on tape. But dang, Fix You comes awful close.
1. Yellow
Yes, it’s simple. Yes, it only features one band member. Yes, it doesn’t have any of the special effects that Coldplay have perfected in other videos. But for many fans it was the first time we had heard of Coldplay. It was the first time we heard the brilliance in their understated musical genius. And it was the first of many times we watched a Coldplay video and said, “Let’s watch that five more times in a row.”
