As with every year at the MTV Video Music Awards, there are always wild performances, surprises, and some pretty spectacular “wow” moments that just make our jaws drop. To quote the ever-wise and ever-not-present Kanye West, “That shit cray,” and cray it was at the awards show last night. We count down the five best OMG-worthy moments at the MTV VMAs.
And don’t forget, you can catch up with everything MTV VMA-related at the MTV website now, and even re-watch the entire show!
Kevin Hart’s opening monologue
The evening’s host opened the night off with a stellar monologue and he didn’t hold back one bit. Tackling the elephants in the room, including Drake and Chris Brown’s feud and everyone’s favourite topic, Kristen Stewart (her ex-boyfriend Rob Pattinson was in the audience while she was in Toronto for the Toronto International Film Festival), Hart fired away at everyone he could think of. The running theme in his opening piece was making mistakes — Chris Brown and Drake’s little brawl was, as Hart says, a misunderstanding over Drake’s love of recycling and Stewart made a momentary mistake by cheating on her Twilight co-star, but one thing was clear: even though Hart warned us that he would go on to make a bunch of mistakes last night, he was on-point and any mistake he might have made definitely didn’t make it on-air. Thumbs up, Kevin!
Drake takes home the moon man for Best Hip-Hop Video
As always, when it was announced that hometown hero Drake won the award for Best Hip-Hop Video, that a) his Cash Money crew would accept the award with him and b) he was going to make a shout-out to Toronto (and even Hamilton!). What did make this moment special, though, was the rapper dedicating his trophy to “any kid that’s ever had a long walk home by yourself,” after telling the audience the story of how he got made fun of at a party once. Drake, who pointed out that the video for HYFR was about his Black/Jewish heritage, completed his speech, at the end with “We made it, Bitch!”
Psy and Kevin Hart do it up, Gangnam Style!
It was reported this week that Korean YouTube sensation Psy has signed with Scooter Braun’s record label and he continued to spread his addictive dance moves at the awards show, doing the now-famous Gangnam Style dance with the night’s host. What’s even more note-worthy about this appearance, though, was Katy Perry’s reaction the whole time. The singer was clearly surprised and elated to see the Korean pop star on stage, almost dancing in her seat during the short guest spot.
Rebel Wilson being Rebel Wilson, i.e. AWESOME
The Bridesmaids star took the stage with boy band The Wanted and let’s just say she practically stole the show. Showing up in a bikini t-shirt and a bag of chips, Wilson told the crowd that she was promised one member of The Wanted after the show and that she could have her pick. We were dying for more of the actress but alas, she was only there to present an award. Fingers crossed she gets to host next year!
Frank Ocean performs/blows our mind
New artist, Frank Ocean, didn’t take home any awards last night, but his performance of Thinkin’ About You was hands down the best performance of the night. It didn’t have fireworks or any fancy tricks, but the singer’s simplistic take, complete with a campfire and guitarist strumming an acoustic guitar next to him, shows just how talented Ocean is and that he’s got plenty of years ahead of him to win some trophies.
