April 1st, 2010

I hope that where ever you are when reading the Red Hot Blog, it is as ridonkulously nooice out as it is here! I’m feeling jolly and chipper and all that junk now that it looks like summer is almost here. Toronto looks purdy in the good weather and in honour of me loving the city now that the weather is less depressing (more than six hours of sunlight in a day, wahoo!!) I have made today’s Top Ten Thursday all about cities in songs.
Empire State of Mind – Jay Z and Alicia Keys

Didja know that Jay Z wanted to offer the singing part to Mary J. Blige, who was born in the Bronx, and changed his mind to Keys, born in Manhattan? I loves me some Mary J., but I don’t think the song would have had the same impact had Keys not been the lead vocal.
London Bridge – Fergie

This song has often been compared to Gwen Stefani’s Hollaback Girl, which I totally don’t get, although both songs make me wanna shake what my mama gave me. This was Fergie’s first single as a solo artist during her break from the Black Eyed Peas and I did not miss Will.I.Am’s voice!
California Love – Tupac and Dr. Dre

Easily one of the best hip hop songs of all time. This song is 15 years old (srsly, I Google’d it) and both the song and video are still killah. RIP Tupac.
No Sleep Til Brooklyn – Beastie Boys

This is one of the many songs that the Beastie Boys have written about their home of New York. I know that Brooklyn is technically a borough, not a city but, it’s the Beasties! Me typing their name is supposed to be enough of an explanation. And! This video is amazing by simply showing that some people actually did look cool in the ‘80s. How did you Boys do it?
Beverly Hills – Weezer

I 100% think the dudes in Weezer wrote this song so that they could hang out at the Playboy Mansion for a few days and watch Playmates use a slip ‘n slide. Revenge of the nerds!
New York I Love You, But You’re Bringing Me Down – LCD Soundsystem

Love Skins? Love Gossip Girl? Love amazing music? Then you’ll love LCD Soundsystem. Their song New York I Love You, But You’re Bringing Me Down…
has been featured on both shows, as well as on constant repeat in my brain. This video has Kermit the Frog as the singer. It’s not easy being green, especially in New York.
Santa Monica – Jay Malinowski

He might be from Canada, but Jay Malinowski sings about California in his song Santa Monica. In the video Jay goes for a swim at the beach while wearing his suit. I think this is a good idea. As a blindingly pasty person who had to swim with a t shirt on as a child in order to avoid bursting into flames, I can tell you that swimming with clothes on makes you a much stronger swimmer. Just don’t expect to have any friends at the pool. No one wants to hang out with the t shirt kid.

Waking Up In Vegas – Katy Perry

Katy Perry’s video for Waking Up in Vegas is the perfect blend of colour, fun and cheesiness to match the hit song. But, is anyone confused about the guy cast as her boyfriend? He looks a little, well…I’m sure he has a good ‘personality’.
Paris, Tokyo – Lupe Fiasco

Lupe Fiasco raps and sings about travelling around the world and missing his girlfriend, who he writes to everyday in the video. Le sigh. He also rocks a 1920s vibe for the video and raps in front of a train. Ballers ride Choo Choo’s.
Boston – Augustana

Augustana sing that they’ll go to Boston “To get out of California.” I assume they’re only going to Boston for the summer. Amazing song with a sweet video that looks pretty and dangerous…pretty dangerous?
