While he wouldn’t say a lot to MuchMusic during his recent trip to Toronto, Travie McCoy is using his past relationship with Katy Perry as the hook for his new mixtape.
Titled Forgetting Katy Perry, Travie told Rap-Up.com that “It’s in no way airing out my dirty laundry or in any way a personal shot to her. If anything, it’s making fun of myself.”
The mixtape’s name sounds like he’s taking a pop at Perry’s fiance Russell Brand, but Travie says it better reflects his own life. “The title is funny for the simple fact that that’s my life in a nutshell. I can watch [the movie] and be like, ‘That dude is me,’” he kidded. “There are a couple of songs on the mixtape that didn’t make the album and there are a lot of features.”
Travie added that he doesn’t want his high profile romance with Katy to overshadow what he does. “To an extent, I’m comfortable with discussing it, but when it becomes the main focus, I’m like, ‘Aight, let’s just keep going,’” he said. “This shit is out for public consumption anyway. In the beginning it was our relationship, but after a while it turned into everyone else’s relationship. On those gossip blogs, everyone has their views on our relationship. I’m over it.”
Forgetting Katy Perry is set to drop some time before Travie’s debut album, Lazarus, which is scheduled for June 8th.
