Treasure Hunt for New Music: Little Birdy

March 11th, 2010

This four piece rock band comes from Perth, Australia and belongs on my list of musical treasures. The moment you hear lead singer Katy Steele‘s unique voice, you are addicted. The honest simplicity of the music and lyrics make it easily relatable for all listeners. Their dangerously catchy melodies maintain an 80’s pop-feel. “It’s a collection of classic-sounding tracks that sound like Dusty Springfield has been teleported from her Memphis heyday into modern-day Melbourne,” reads Little Birdy’s official webpage.

So far the band has released two EPs and three albums, the latest titled Confetti. The band has posted a notice to all of their fans that they have decided to take a break from recording and touring to focus on their individual musical careers, but assures us that they will be working together again in the future. And here I was, wishing on my lucky stars that they would come touring in Canada…Bummer. While all of their music is a discovery worth getting excited about, the album Confetti has that glint of something special.

Confetti is captivating and truthful in depicting love, relationships, and life’s bittersweet tendency to change all too quickly. Recommended tracks off the album are: “Stay Wild”, “Brother”, “Hairdo” and “Crazy”. Check out their MySpace here!

“We just want to try and continue to be as honest as we can with our music. We don’t want to be swept away with any trends. We want to make it feel timeless and most of all, we want people to feel something real when they listen. That’s all,” Katy Steele explains in her bio. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

For now, let’s spread this Little Birdy epidemic, ha ha. I’m not funny.
