#trending – New Labels Competition

May 24th, 2011

Happy Tuesday! Is it just me or did this long weekend feel extra long? It’s a good thing because I was exhausted after working on last week’s episode of #trending! Did you watch it? We had a ton of fun putting it together and I think it was definitely one of our most diverse episodes yet!

My favorite part was getting to cover the New Labels Competition, an annual runway show put on by the Toronto Fashion Incubator. We got to go backstage to interview the three designers who were battling it out for the grand prize of $10,000, a spread in Flare Magazine and a chance to design an outfit for Sears!

The show took place at the Design Exchange building in Toronto – a former stock market hub that’s been converted into an event space. Backstage, the atmosphere was super intense: models were running around getting fitted into their clothes, makeup artists were scrambling to finish off their looks and the press was everywhere trying to grab the designers for last-minute interviews. Before we knew it, the event organizers were on their walkie-talkies telling everyone to file into the runway room for the show. You saw some of the highlights of the show on #trending. What you DIDN’T see was the deliberation process. After each of the designers took their final bow the panel of judges left the room to deliberate while the audience was entertained by the MC. I always wondered how long these judging sessions take, but in this case it wasn’t more than 15 minutes. Before we knew it the judges had returned to announce Golnaz Ashtiani was the New Labels Competition winner!

I rushed backstage again to interview Golnaz and I could tell she was a little overwhelmed by all the attention. She was mobbed by people wanting to congratulate her and press wanting to talk to her and I think I saw her family waiting backstage as well to greet her. Golnaz told me the process actually started months ago when she first submitted her application for the contest. She had three judging sessions before they finally selected her for the show. Now she is $10,000 richer and about to have her clothes in Flare Magazine and Sears. She’s definitely come a long way and we can’t wait to see what she does next!
