Trouble In PVR Paradise

November 3rd, 2005

I am seriously pissed!

I rely on the magic that is the PVR (Personal Video Recorder, for those of you not hip to the lingo) to tape a minimum of 6 shows a night for me to enjoy when I choose. Once in a while, the weird powers of the PVR seem to randomly choose a program to record that I have not requested. Perhaps the PVR thinks I might enjoy an episode of “Dog The Bounty Hunter” or The Cantonese newscast on the multicultural channel. This, I do not mind so much. I think it’s kind of funny. I don’t know why it happens really… it’s a mystery.

But last night, my PVR, for no apparent reason, decided it was not going to record any of my shows at all. None of them. They were all in the “to be recorded” list – but the PVR took matters into it’s own hands and decided I’d be better of not knowing what happened on “LOST” or “Invasion” (although the latter is getting pretty damn boring – so it might have been a good thing). Speaking of good things, the PVR even turned it’s back on Miss Martha’s “Apprentice”. This is just touching on the shows it decided to ignore last night.

Was my PVR on strike? How could this happen to me? Has this happened to anyone else? Also, last week it recorded a whole show while I was home and I was waiting for it to finish before watching it (big mistake), but then the show never showed up in my recorded list. It just vanished into thin air. Why would the PVR work so hard recording a show and then NOT give me access to it? Is my machine possessed by the devil?

Needless to say, me and my PVR are not talking. I know they say you should never go to bed mad – but I did. This morning I just stared at it in disgust. Good thing they announced this week that TIVO is coming to Canada. SO I am dumping my PVR to get it on with TIVO as soon as possible. I hope the TIVO doesn’t treat me this way…
