Ready? I’m warning you from now, it’s quite a mouthful (but that’s what makes this show so freaking good!)

Here we go: Katherine’s back. She has a plan – and a back-story. Turns out vamps and wolves weren’t bound by any magical rules once upon a time. This meant they couldn’t keep their hands to themselves and almost destroyed the livelihood of an ancient Aztec tribe. So the Aztecs cursed vamps to be slaves to the sun and werewolves to be slaves to the moon. In order to complete the curse they used the blood of a young girl named Petrova.

Got all that? Good, cause there’s a loophole. The curse could be undone every time that young girl was born again. So over the centuries, Petrova doppelgangers were born as a means to break the spell.

Katherine Pierce AKA Katarina Petrova was one of these doppelgangers. Klaus and Elijah, two original vampires (around before the curse took place) tried to capture her and break the spell. She escaped and turned herself into a vampire so her blood would be useless. But not before Klaus killed her entire family. Little did he know Katarina bore a bastard daughter in secret so the Petrova line could continue.

Pissed, Klaus hunted Katerina down for revenge. She travelled all the way to Mystic falls, changed her name to Katherine and fell in love with Stefan Salvatore. Big bro Damon fell in love with her too. But she couldn’t shake Klaus so she faked her death, believed by everyone to have burned in a church.
But after vamping both Salvatore brothers, Damon couldn’t live without her and found out her servant/witch Emily Bennett placed a spell to save her mistress in the tomb.

Fast-forward to 2010 and Damon finds the next Petrova doppelganger Elena Gilbert and uses her BFF (and Emily’s descendant wouldn’t you know) Bonnie to open the tomb under the church where Katherine supposedly burned. This act reveals Katherine wasn’t in the tomb after all and her death was faked.
And now Klaus knows this too. And he’s really, really pissed. So much so he threw out his right-hand man Elijah.

Now Katherine has a new plan for her freedom: help Klaus finish what he started hundreds of years ago with Elena instead. All she has to do is round up the rest of the ingredients for Klaus’ spell: a witch (Bonnie Bennett), the Moonstone (from Mason Lockwood, now deceased), a vampire (vamping Caroline Forbes) and a werewolf (triggering Tyler Lockwood).

Another bonus to Katherine being back in Mystic Falls for the spell: her one true love Stefan. She’s determined to get him, and will stop at nothing (even giving him dirty, raunchy dreams about her) in order to win him back.

Elijah’s back in town too, and he’s also pissed about getting tossed out of Klaus’ inner circle. Wanting his own revenge against Klaus he makes a deal with Elena: act like everything’s normal until Klaus arrives and then Elijah will kill him. Elena says yes, but only because she needed him to rescue Stefan from being trapped with Katherine in a tomb.

Bonnie on the other hand, wants to make sure the curse can never be undone and attempts to de-power the moonstone. She uses the help of another witch in Mystic Falls, Luca. But what she doesn’t know is that Luca’s father is working with Elijah, and they don’t want the moonstone depowered. So yeah, Luca tricked her. But he doesn’t know why.

Caroline helps Tyler deal with his transformation into a werewolf fully knowing his bite could kill her (he doesn’t know this yet). They manage to get really close even though Caroline is really in love with Matt (who has no idea of the supernatural stuff going on).

Damon and Stefan have a little help on the whole Klaus thing when another old vampire named Rose comes to help them out. But before they can learn everything she knows she’s bitten by a werewolf. This means a) she’ll probably die and b) there’s a new, blonde female werewolf in town.

Elena’s brother Jeremy wants in on the action too and gets close with Bonnie. But she turns him down as she can’t deal with his immaturity right now (he’s the reason Stefan got trapped with Katherine in the first place).

Before Elijah freed him from Katherine’s tomb, she made a deal with Stefan in order to earn back his good favour. If anyone wants info on Klaus, they’ve got to find Elena’s birth mother, Isobel Saltzman.
