Tyler, The Creator makes offensive Mountain Dew ad with a goat

May 1st, 2013

Pop Quiz! If I told you that Tyler, The Creator and the Odd Future crew made a Mountain Dew commercial, what would it likely be like? (A) Exciting (B) Happy or (C) Offensive? If you picked (C)… you’re probably right. People are up in arms about Tyler’s latest creation, a series of Mountain Dew commercials featuring Felicia the Goat. The series follows this miscreant of a goat who is hopped up on the Dew and causes a ruckus wherever it goes.

The commercials have been released in a series hasn’t been too offensive. The first commercial features the goat violently reacting against a waitress wanting some Mountain Dew, the second revolves around the goat getting chased by the cops, but the third has been deemed super offensive and racist by many. Want to check it out? Watch it here.

Personally, I don’t find it racist. Sure, there’s only African American men in the line up, but they’re members of Odd Future, and I think featuring people from the group was their intent. I don’t like however, how the commercial is making light about violence against women, but I again don’t see how this is more offensive than shows like Law & Order or videos like Kanye West’s Flashing Lights. Is it that Mountain Dew, a beverage company, is trying to commodify violence and racial themes? Or did they just think that Tyler, The Creator is some sort of creative genius. They probably thought the latter.

What do you guys think of the commercial? At the end of the day I didn’t find the commercial offensive. I just found it to be dumb. Sound off in the comments section!
