[Ed. note: Last week Mark found out that U2 would be playing a very small show in Boston and on a whim, he bought a plane ticket to see one of his favourite bands in a rare setting. Here’s his story!)

The day started off early with a red eye shuttle to the always friendly and relaxing Buffalo airport. Nobody wants to be that guy who’s asleep on a bench, but at 3am you stop caring.

Boston was experiencing the same cold and drizzle dog combo as Toronto ,which proved slightly frightening when landing. Hearing that Toronto was experiencing major delays made the experience worth it though, as we were checked into the amazing Fairmont Battery Wharf within 45 mins of landing.

A day of strolling around Boston admiring the wildlife followed. Taking a cue from Kat and Wendy’s local zoo trips I sped through the Boston aquarium and checked out penguins… who I can confirm… are the new otters.

Off to the Boston Museum of Technology to load into buses with a police escort to the venue. Quite an experience - as I remember it was the Smashing Pumpkins who got a police escort to to MMVAs from Hamilton many years ago. As we got to the suburb of Sommerville it seemed like the entire town lined the streets to see the convoy arrive.

U2 took the stage promptly at 9 and rocked through a blistering performance of 5 songs to a room packed with 700 superfans. They played the new material as if unleashing it for the first time to a proper concert audience after two weeks of promotion on radio and Letterman. The set was followed by a Q&A with fans where it was revealed amongst other things that U2’s first North American show was in Boston some 25 years ago.

The band just announced a massive tour in support of their #1 album No Line On The Horizon, which will hit Toronto in September and other dates in Canada shortly after. The stadium tour will be a first where the stage will be 360 degrees and every seat will have a direct view.

Boston Setlist:

Get On Your Boots
Magnificent
I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight
Breathe
Vertigo
