VFest ‘07 - Kid Koala

September 8th, 2007

Montreal-based DJ Kid Koala is currently spinning on the mainstage and all I can think is, “Wow, what an odd cacophony of sounds.” Old-school vocals, mixed with bluesy harmonica, mixed with new-school beats - no wonder his records are literally melting on stage right now - it sounds HOT! Too bad a lot of the audience took this opportunity to go check out some of the other side stages.

But I do agree that this type of DJ is an odd entry to the VFest line-up, in the middle of a hot, sunny day. It’s usually more conducive to a drunken, dance-able nightclub. But surprisingly Kid Koala is keeping things fresh and the audience is really starting to eat it up - so I guess bring it on! He’s proving first-hand that great turntablism is still great on a Saturday afternoon at 5pm.

Damn my fractured calcaneus! (again, look it up). I wanna be dancin’ in the sunshine right now!

PS: The crowd seems awesome. Kid Koala had to cut his set short because the needles of his turntables are slipping right off the records due to the heat and the audience gave him a very happy sympathetic sound off! See?! Everyone’s bonding!
