When Matthew Good finally took the stage just before 7pm, I thought to myself, “NOW we’re cooking with gas”. City & Colour had turned up the volume by a few notches, but it was Matthew Good who really got things rowdy in time for The Tragically Hip‘s set.
I feel like whenever people see bands (or solo artists) they’re always kinda hoping they’ll delve back into old material. Like when Rob Dickinson (The Catherine Wheel) or Richard Ashcroft (The Verve) tour, how can they possibly NOT play any old songs that they wrote with their former bandmates? Impossible. So naturally I was really happy that Matthew Good was nice enough to bring us back to that happy era in the nineties when there was literally an overdose-worthy amount of great music to listen to – right when MGB albums were in heavy rotation on my stereo.
He started out with a triad of old Matthew Good Band hits (Giant, Hello Time Bomb and Everything Is Automatic) before moving into newer material that really got the crowd going. It was really a pleasure to see him live again after all these years of missing him whenever he came to town.
And yep, he played Load Me Up too, and of course, Apparitions (which, FYI, still gets daily airtime on my iPod).
Setlist:
Giant
Hello Time Bomb
Everything Is Automatic
Born Losers
The Devil’s In Your Details
Alert Status Red
Load Me Up
Put Out Your Lights
I’m A Window
Black Helicopter
Apparitions
Weapon
