Dave Meyers has directed almost 200 videos for some of the biggest superstars in the game - Britney, Jay-Z, Pink, Janet, Hilary - but you never really know what kind of twisted originality he can whip up until he pairs with one Missy Elliott. But this time, the duo have really out-done themselves, creating history with the first 3D music video EVARRR!!

But let’s back it up for a second here - it’s no question that Missy has built a career on revolutionary music and video. That was clear when she trashed the music video competition in ‘97 wearing what appeared to be an inflated garbage bag in “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)“. Or looking like MegaMan in “Sock It 2 Me“. And then something wondrous happened in 2001: Missy found a director by the name of Dave Meyers, and together they made the video for “Get Ur Freak On“. And it was good.
To the present!! Days ago, Missy ‘n Dave released the first ever 3D music video, as I mentioned above, for the blazing hot single “Ching-A-Ling” (with a taste of “Shake Your Pom Pom” at the end). At its base, the video is typical Missy stylies - sick dancers dressed in amazing clothes, moving like you’ve never really seen anyone move before. This time, cues are taken from a stop-motion style of dance from Japan called Woomin, which Missy discovered on el internets. Kind of poppy and locky but with more whimsy. Of course the beat is on point, and while you’re shaking your head at the dance crew try not to also let your head explode at the fact that the whole thing IS IN 3D. Have I mentioned that already?
Truthfully, it’s a little tough to get the full 3D effect on the internet, so I’d recommend keeping your 3D glasses in an easy-to-grab place so you can see it properly on TV. What do you mean, you don’t have 3D glasses?!?!?! Forgodsakes. I guess go to a toy section near you? Maybe a Miley Cyrus in 3D matinee? (JOKES). If all else fails, the video still looks pretty cool without the glasses, in a semi-blurry technicolour kind of way. No serious, you can still enjoy it without the glasses. Pinky swear. OR, you could just watch the non 3D version. That better?
Watch the non-3D version!
Note to self: Missy’s latest album is supposed to drop this spring, and is rumoured to feature an appearance by Amy Winehouse (whaaaaaaaaaaaaat) and the return of Timbaland, who’s been m.i.a. on Missy albums for about 4 years!
