Virgin Festival Calgary: Updates On The Fly + The Fratellis!

June 21st, 2008

Phew! We made it to Fort Calgary! I took a quick tour of the area (which, in case you were wondering, is already crammed with festival goers) and came across something wicked – the TD Go Zone.

I’m planted here right now – it’s a solar-powered computer station that anyone at the festival can access for free, and it’s got MacBooks with internet access and digital camera card readers that are essentially allowing to update the site right now, on the fly, complete with pics! Nice! In the meantime, I’m listening to Face To Face tear up the main stage to my left. It really can’t get more “on the fly” than this.

I just chatted with Barry from The Fratellis backstage and we bonded over sensitive skin in this Calgary heat (26 C last time I checked!). In fact, we shared a bottle of sunscreen. I don’t mean to schill, but I’m really partial to Neutrogena Cooling Mist SPF 60 and I’ve been spritzing myself with it liberally. Anyhoodle, Barry and co. had just finished performing a quick, early set on the main stage, and it was a far cry from the kinda crowd that they’re used to. You’ll hear more from Barry later when I upload his backstage video blog, but he shared with me the fact that the guys are heading back home (home=Scotland) for a few weeks before they kickstart a string of MASSIVE UK festivals, including co-headlining Glastonbury as well as Reading/Leeds.

Also, the music that’s playing on the festival grounds in between band sets is AMAZING. Earlier I heard The Pixies’ U Mass (seriously – who knows that song!? No one, that’s who) and now they’re playing Blonde Redhead. Nice work, festival DJ!

P.S.: Peep the Stone Temple Pilots’ roadcase that I snapped a pic of while backstage. Apparently they like poo. Who knew!?
